Is My Child at Risk for Myopia?

If you’ve been dealing with nearsightedness since childhood, you’re probably worried your child will get it too. Before each visit to the kids eye doctor, you may wonder about your child’s chances of getting diagnosed with myopia.

Don’t worry! That’s the first advice our eye doctors in Troy, Luverne, Enterprise and Ozark share. Myopia is a common vision condition, easily treatable with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Once your young child gets a bit older, LASIK may also be an option.

Additionally, nearsightedness doesn’t interfere with learning or development. If it occurs along with another vision problem, such as difficulty with convergence or focusing, we offer personalized vision therapy for kids.

What’s the cause of nearsightedness?

While the precise cause of myopia isn’t clear, genetics play a large role. So if both parents are nearsighted, there’s a higher risk that their children will be too.

Some researchers also think eye fatigue from excessive reading or holding screens too close to the face can raise children’s risk of developing myopia. However, this theory is still up for debate.

Is there any way to prevent myopia?

All those times you told your kids to go outside and play, did you realize the positive eye health effects it could have? Recent studies have shown that outdoor playtime can reduce kids’ risks of nearsightedness. If your child is already nearsighted, playing outdoors can reduce the rate of myopia progression.

Since myopia is largely inherited, it’s not possible to totally prevent it. But there are still steps you can take to help minimize its impact. Along with encouraging healthy habits and outdoor activity, be sure to bring your child for regular eye exams to our kids eye doctor in Troy, Luverne, Enterprise and Ozark.
